Does The Pax 2 Hold Up In 2019?

If you’re a follower of the vape scene, odds are you’re acquainted with Pax Labs and their range of dry herb vaporizers.

The Pax 2 Vaporizer and its successor the Pax 3 Vaporizer, are considered one of the best portable vapes on the market. But with the new, smaller model having come out, is Pax 2 still worth your money in 2019?

Pax vaporizers have been called the “iPhones” of dry herb vaporizers due to their sleek design and user-friendly handling. The simple interface with four LED lights and a single button hides an array of options and easter eggs to make your vape experience not only effective, but fun as well. That’s just the icing on the cake, though. To really examine if the Pax 2 holds up today, we need to get down to the basics first.

Battery life

The original Pax traded one hour of charging for one hour of performance, whereas the Pax 2 takes two to three hours to fully charge but gives around 90 minutes of vaping. While it is a bit of a trade-off, the charging time is still quite average for portable vaporizers and you get a solid run from it.

The Oven

The Pax 2 can hold around a third of a gram when packed tightly. While it is officially a dry herb vaporizer only, Pax 3 accessories are compatible with the Pax 2, so you can get a concentrate insert that came with the newer series. A fine grind and tight pack provide the best performance, and on a full chamber you can get up to 20 draws. You will have to give the oven a quick scrape every couple of sessions to maintain a nice flow. The cleaning process is made much simpler than the original model, which is a nice upgrade.

The Pax 2 gives a nice clean vapor with minimal draw resistance (provided you keep the oven clean). You can switch between four temperature settings: 360, 380, 400 and 420 °F. It creates a fair amount of vapor for a portable vaporizer, and a full, rich taste thanks to the improved heating element that distributes the temperature more evenly throughout your material. If you make sure not to overpack the oven you’ll find that you can get a solid session without popping the chamber open for stirring.

Where the Pax 2 Vaporizer really shines is the sensor technology that keeps track of when you’re vaping. If it senses that you’ve not drawn in a while, it will start slowly cooling the oven so as not to waste the material by unnecessary heating. Once you start drawing again the oven is quickly heated up to the desired temperature.

Modes and Games

The Pax 2 features a stealth mode and a party mode. Stealth mode is enabled by shaking the device before and during startup, and it dims the lights on the device not to draw unnecessary attention. To initiate party mode, you need to rotate the vape horizontally three times. Every time you rotate it three times, a different party mode will be enabled. In classic party mode, the lights will signal when someone is drawing and the oven will stay heated in between hits, keeping the desired temperature while the device is being passed around. In light painting mode, the lights will turn on when you move your vape. You can even turn the oven off in this mode and just play with the device, creating some beautiful long-exposure photography.

There’s also a “Knight rider” color mode, which you access by rolling your device three times in the opposite direction. The green light effects might remind you of a certain vehicle from the NBC’s “Knight rider” tv show.

The Pax 2 also includes a “Simon” game, reminiscent of the “Simon says”. During “Simon”, you hold your device flat. As one of the lights flashes, you need to tilt the device in the requested direction. When you beat a level, all four lights will flash. Once you beat 20 levels of the game you’ll even unlock an easter egg! If you shake the device after beating the game, it will play a very “funky” tune (we won’t spoil the surprise). After you beat level 40 you’ll unlock a new color scheme for your LED interface.

While most of these options are not integral to the vaping experience, apart from the party mode’s constant oven temp which can come in quite handy, they give a fun and unique character to the Pax 2. These features make the Pax 3 more than just a vaping device.

The Pax 2 Compared to the Pax 3

With the Pax 3 now available to buy, you might be wondering why you should even bother with the old model. While it’s true that the successor has some upgrades, the Pax 2 still holds up against its younger brother in most regards. The Pax 3 has bluetooth control and a mobile app that allows for custom temperature control, dynamic vaping and a faster heating time. If these things are most important to you, you might want to opt for the Pax 3. Keep in mind, though, that the newer model with the complete kit costs around a 100$ more than the Pax 2.

The Pax 2 delivers a solid vaping experience and is still one of the best portable dry herb vaporizers on the market in 2019. If you’re a tech freak then the newer Pax 3 might be more fitting to your taste, but if you like some casual, fun and intuitive handling then Pax 2 will more than fulfill your needs.
