Some already vaped bud (AVB)
Some already vaped bud (AVB)

After using a vaporizer for a few weeks (or months), you should have quite a bit of already been vaped (ABV) bud leftover (providing you’ve decided to save it!). One popular thing to do with ABV is to make cannaoil, a potent form of olive oil infused with THC. I prefer making cannaoil to cannabutter, as I find that olive oil is a much healthier option than butter, and gives me a wider range of things to make. If you’d like to try making your own cannaoil, just follow this simple guide and you’ll have some great tasting oil in only a few hours! Before making cannaoil, make sure you have at least 14 grams of ABV saved up to mix into the oil. Any less and it may not be very potent. As a rule of thumb, its best to use 2x as much ABV than you would fresh bud.

  • 1L of cooking oil (can be olive, canola, corn, etc)
  • At least 14g of ABV (14g is the minimum, 28g+ works much better)
  • Metal mesh strainer

First off, purchase some cooking oil to use as the base for the mixture. Although you can use any oil, I like to use olive oil since it is healthy, and I’ve heard that THC bonds very well to the monounsaturated fat. Pour about 1L of oil into a large saucepan, and set your stove to the 1-3 heat setting. You may need to adjust the temperature throughout the process in order to avoid burning the oil. Simmering oil can be dangerous (flare-ups can occur if you are not careful) so make sure to stay in the kitchen while cooking.

Next, take your ABV (which should be finely ground) and add it into the oil mix, stirring occasionally. You’ll want this mixture to simmer but not smoke. Keep cooking the cannaoil at this temperature for 1-4 hours (I prefer letting it go for 2 hours to make sure the THC has been properly absorbed. Once you’re finished cooking, the oil should be slightly brown and the ABV quite dark.

Next, take your ABV off the stove and let it cool to room temperature. Take a small metal mesh strainer, and run the oil through it twice or three times to filter out any sediment. When you’re finished, pour the oil into a jar. Congrats, you now have some potent cannaoil!

After making your cannaoil, you can now use it in a variety of ways. My favorite is to pour some of the oil on to pasta, but you can use the oil in a wide range of ways just like normal oil (on bread, in sauces, etc). Be careful if it is your first time using edibles, as cannaoil can be quite potent, especially in higher doses!

  1. 1) THC doesn’t so much bond to oil or butter; it is a hydrophobic molecule that can be dissolved in oils and fats. While there might be slight differences in the solubility of THC in mono vs. poly saturated fats, I doubt it’s significant.

    2) The use of a double boiler greatly facilitates this process. You don’t have to worry about getting the temperature exactly right, you simply let the steam do the heating of your oil or butter. This prevents overheating and degrading the THC.

    1. Actually,it does bond very well, Coconut has more monostauated fat per gram and this makes it the best oil to use. Double boiler is ineffective when making ABV cannaoil. Best way to do this is use water a buffer in your mix get the water boiling (water cannot exceed 212df) mix in either oil or butter (and your herbs) keep just enough water in the pot to act as the buffer you will need to add more water but less attention to the bubbly mass will be nice for blazing while it cooks. After a minimum of 2 hours strain out herb or abv, aslo a metal strainer will never get out half of the sediment, you need cheese cloth and you only need to strain your stuff once. pour all your water oil mix while warm into a big glass mason jar and put in in your freezer. when you wake up (hopefully you passed out from blazing your face off). You will open you freezer and see something like a project you did in elementary school and all the water(brown/green crap) will be on the bottom and your deliciously XTR3MLY potent oil will be on top. I pore mine into a massive measuring cup and just flip it over and the mass falls out and i split the oil from the water and through the water away. I hope this helps everyone make much more potent abv edibles.

  2. A double boiler (a crock pot I assume) definitely takes a lot of the risk of overheating, but many people don’t have access to one.

Also, on the site I use AVB (Already Vaped Bud) and ABV (Already Been Vaped) pretty interchangeably. I always forget which one is the more commonly used term!

  3. A double boiler can easily be made using two sauce pots, or a sauce pot and a metal bowl. You simply put water in the bottom pot and boil, place your substance (chocolate, or cheese for fondue, or oil/thc, etc) in other pot/the bowl, then place it on top of the boiling pot. The water boils, the steam rises and gently heats your top bowl.

Double Boilers are also pretty cheap. I got a heavy duty one with a steaming rack for $40, and I use it any time I need to boil any water, so it was well worth it for me.

  4. it’s very effective with a slow cooker. put some water in it and contain your abv and oil in a mason jar or something like that. set it to low for a while. you can’t simmer it too long, so consider 4+ hours.

with coconut oil especially, this gets surprisingly potent.

    1. How much water to oil and abv amount which I have enough for now so the stronger the better. Lets say 1 oz of abv. Coconut oil enough to cover it in the crock pot. but water ?? is that for steam for some reason.

  5. I used vegetable oil and it came out really dark and smells kind of funky. I haven’t tried it yet, does that sound right?

  6. I’ve been using ABV Cannabis flowers in extra virgin olive oil, I however, merely fill a large jar with ABV Cannabis and then mix in the EVOO, once it well soaked I set it in a cool place in the cupboard and leave it for a month .. Everyone loves it, I also cook with it, use it in oatmeal, on salads, past etc… It’s very potent me no risk involved.

  7. Made a large mason jar full. Vegetable oil and coconut oil, abv, roach dope and stems, about 13grms total. Whatever. I eyeball everything lol good stuff. Will make muffins soon, panic for breakfast lol

  8. Well since the ABV/AVB is already decarbed, couldnt you technically just pour some oil over it and let it sit for a few days to extract the THC and then strain and use? Granted might take a lil longer(as in days even) but would work correct?
