Aside from THC, cannabis also contains another highly useful component which often goes overlooked when it comes to medicinal purposes. Cannabidiol (or CBD for short) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid which is non-psychoactive and thus does not produce a high feeling like you would get from smoking regular cannabis. CBD can extracted from regular cannabis (or even hemp) in the form of CBD oil, but there’s also specific strains of cannabis which have been bred to contain high amounts of CBD and low amounts of THC. The administration of CBD has a wide range of benefits which can be of great use to a number of people suffering adverse conditions, and so I decided to put together this handy guide to help inform VaporBlog readers on the benefits of CBD as well as how to best consume it!

The Benefits of CBDs

As CBD is not psychoactive, it can be great to use at times when being high would be detrimental to your activities (for example when you need to work) while still providing significant relief from an array of conditions. A number of studies have attributed the following benefits the use of CBDs:

Anti-Inflammatory Effects

cannabidiolPain and inflammation are among some of the most common and unpleasant medical conditions people face, and CBDs have been showing promising results in helping to reduce both pain and inflammation. According to a 2012 study in The Journal of Experimental Medicine, the “administration of cannabidiol (CBD), … significantly suppresses chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain without causing apparent analgesic tolerance in rodents.” Suppressing chronic inflammation without causing a tolerance to its pain relieving effects is a very large benefit to those suffering from pain and inflammation, especially since many over the counter pain medications (including acetaminophen) can cause liver damage.

Anxiety Relief

Through animal models and human volunteers, a study exploring the anxiolytic effects of CBDs have discovered that that CBD possesses anti-anxiety effects and can help reduce anxiety in patients suffering from social anxiety disorder. Future clinical trials seek to explore these benefits further and will also look to discover how CBD can also aid those suffering from other anxiety conditions including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as well as panic disorder.

Antipsychotic Effects

Cannabis ResearchA 30 year translational investigation of CBD has produced some very promising results regarding its antipsychotic properties. According to the study, “CBD appears to have [a] pharmacological profile similar to that of atypical antipsychotic drugs as seen using behavioral and neurochemical techniques in animal models. Additionally, CBD prevented human experimental psychosis and was effective in open case reports and clinical trials in patients with schizophrenia with a remarkable safety profile.” As traditional antipsychotics come with a wide range of adverse side effects, the use of CBD is looking promising in helping to mitigate psychotic effects seen in those with disorders such as schizophrenia while producing minimal adverse side effects in patients.

Helps Protect Against Diabetes And Cardiovascular Issues

As outlined in a 2013 study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, CBD can mitigate damage caused by high blood sugar environments, and animal models within the study have shown that the administration of CBD can protect against the induction of Type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes affects a large number of people worldwide, and according to the stydy the use of CBD may be beneficial in slowing or prevent onset of type 2 diabetes with minimal side effects. Moreover, the study also notes that CBD appears to “influence the survival and death of white blood cells, white blood cell migration and platelet aggregation. Taken together, these preclinical data appear to support a positive role for CBD treatment in the heart, and in peripheral and cerebral vasculature.”

Nausea Relief

Another study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology has found that CBD possessess both anti-emetic (anti-vomiting) as well as anti-nausea effects when administered to rats. However, the researchers determined that dosage is important as despite relieving symptoms of nausea in lower doses, higher doses of CBD can have no effect or even increase nausea in patients!

Counteract the Negative Effects of THC

Studies have also shown that the administration of CBD can be beneficial in counteracting some of the negative effects of THC including memory impairment and anxiety. THC can also cause drowsiness, but co-administration of THC with CBD has been shown to help counteract THC’s somnolent effects which can be unwanted during the daytime.

Vaping CBDs: The Ideal Route of Administration (ROA)

Although CBDs can be dose orally and ingested in the form of capsules or candies, vaping is actually a much better way to consume them for several reasons. Firstly, when you ingest CBDs, only about 15% is available (able to be used by your body) compared to 50-60% bioavailability when vaping it with a vape pen. Secondly, vaping a quality CBD e-liquid allows your body to absorb them much faster than ingestion (which can take several hours before effects become pronounced), and this enables you to better control your dosage and start feeling the effects much quicker. A rapid onset time is especially beneficial for those who experience conditions which can arise quickly, such as nausea.

If you have access to a cannabis dispensary, I recommend talking to your budtender to see if they carry any high CBD and low THC strains such as Charlotte’s Web. If they do, you can vaporize this cannabis with a standard loose leaf cannabis vaporizer (be sure to check out the reviews section here on VaporBlog for a list of the best vaporizers!). If you don’t have access to low CBD cannabis, using a vape pen with CBD e-juice is another great option, and also has the added benefit of being highly discreet and portable without producing any noticeable smell.

Concluding Thoughts

Vaping CBD oils or loose leaf strains is a great way to help improve a number of conditions, and I expect future studies will continue to find helpful uses for this great cannabinoid. However, despite the benefits of CBD Oils, it is very important to know that the source for your oils provides legitimate CBD extract and not some research chemical in its place. I’ve heard reports of certain brands of pre-filled CBD pens using research chemicals rather than actual CBD, and this can give you an unpleasant buzz while containing no actual CBDs. True CBD oil shouldn’t give you any kind of high feeling, so always make sure to perform some background research prior to ordering any CBD oils online to ensure you’re procuring them from a reliable and trustworthy source!
